Overview
When managing your menu(s) within the Otter Dashboard, you will be alerted to any pre-publishing or post-publishing errors detected— helping to quickly identify and resolve any issues more efficiently to successfully publish your menu(s).
Pre-Publish Menu Alerts
Before a menu is published, Otter will check for issues and categorize them as one of the following:
-
Identified by a yellow banner (shown below)— This indicates that the menu is not in an ideal state to be published and there are suggestions to make adjustments before attempting to publish.
Publishing Attempt with Pre-Publish Warning
You will still be able to attempt to (and possibly successfully) publish a menu without addressing issues flagged by the pre-publish warning. However, it is always recommended to check out and resolve any alerts prior to publishing.
-
Identified by a red banner (shown below)— This indicates there are issues flagged for the menu that will result in a failed publishing event if not resolved prior to publishing.
Publishing Attempt with Pre-Publish Error
You will not be able to successfully publish the menu with Pre-Publish Errors flagged until the issues are resolved.
For either type of pre-publishing alert, just click [View issues] and follow the prompt shown to resolve.
If you’re unable to self-resolve any issues, you can reach out to Otter support for help.
Post-Publish Menu Alerts
After attempting to publish a menu, if there are any issues— Otter will alert you to the failed publishing event, what issue caused the failure, and the corresponding location/platform.
These alerts will show as a red banner after a failed publishing attempt (shown below).
To resolve these errors, just click [View issues] and follow the prompt shown.
Resolving Post-Publish Errors
Post-Publish errors must be resolved before the menu can be successfully published. If the error is unresolved and you attempted to publish the menu, the publishing event will continue to fail until resolved.
If you’re unable to self-resolve any issues, you can reach out to Otter support for help.
Troubleshooting
Below are some common menu publishing issues and how to resolve them.
- If there is a currency mismatch issue detected, you will be alerted by a pre-publish error banner.
Step Process Image 1 Click [View Issues] from the Publish tab. 2 Click [Update currency]. 3 A recommended currency will show to apply (based on most used for items in that menu).
Click [Update currency] to apply changes.
Menus for Different Countries & Currencies
If the menu you’re trying to publish does actually apply to stores with different currencies, you will need to create a menu for each currency and assign it to the location accordingly.
Currently, you can only have one currency per menu.
-
If your menu contains nested modifiers and you’re attempting to publish to a platform that doesn’t support this menu structure, you will be alerted by a publish error banner.
Step Process Image 1 Click [View Issues] from the Publish tab. 2 Click [View all]. 3 All items with nested modifiers will show to edit.
Click [Edit] to make changes to that item.
In these cases, if a platform doesn’t support nested modifiers, but you still want to give eaters an option for that modifier— instead of creating nested modifiers, you would just create more options in the modifier group.
Example
This modifier group Side Salad— with a choice between a Caesar Salad or House Salad— contains a nested modifier of Add Grilled Chicken.
To resolve the nested modifier unsupported issue, remove the nested modifier from the two salad choices. Then create salad options with chicken to the existing modifier group.
The options for the Side Salad modifier group would now show as:
Caesar Salad $0.00
Caesar Salad w/ Grilled Chicken +$3.00
House Salad $0.00
House Salad w/ Grilled Chicken +$3.00
-
If attempting to publish a menu that contains negative prices and you’re attempting to publish to a platform that doesn’t support negative prices, you will be alerted by a publish error banner.
Step Process Image 1 Click [View Issues] from the Publish tab. 2 Click [View all]. 3 All items with negative prices will show to edit.
Click [Edit] to make changes to that item
In these cases, if a platform doesn’t support negative prices, but you still want to give eaters an option for that modifier— instead of creating negative prices, you could:
- Adjust the price of the main menu item, add a price to add-ons, and set the negative price as $0
- Just set the price of the negative item to $0
Editing your menu depends on what best works for that menu item and your business.
Example
For the Smash Cheeseburger Combo ($11.95), you must select a Drink option— if the eater chooses Water, the price of the item is deducted by $1.00.
To resolve the negative price issue for this item, you could just change the price of the Water option to $0, to match the other Drink options.
However, if you still want to give eaters the choice of a cheaper option by choosing Water as their Drink choice, you would:
- Change the price of the Smash Cheeseburger Combo to $10.95 (to account for the -$1.00 previously offered)
- Change Water price to $0
- Change price for other drink options to $1.00
