POS Discount Settings
There are many ways that discounts can be customized and applied, unlocking a whole world of needs for your restaurant team.
Discount Types
Otter offers four types of discounts that provide unique functions and features.

Create a fixed discount button that offers either a % amount off of a total customer check.
- Create a fixed amount or percentage off of select items. Apply the discount to [Item] and then select the specific items you want the discount to be applied to.

- Create a fixed amount or percentage off of selected categories. Apply the discount to [Category] and then select the specific categories you want the discount to be applied to.

Incentive discount option, offering you the ability to create discounts like:
- Buy 1 get 1 free
- Buy two, get one 50% off
Set the [Buy applies to] setting to either category or item and then select the specific categories/items. Now set the [Discount applies to] setting to either category or item and then select the specific categories/items.
This discount type offers multi-select.
Discount Availability
Set start and end dates and times for a discount, allowing the discount to be used in Otter POS for only a limited time. Limit the discount to certain days of the week, or mark the discount to never expire.
Discount Advanced Settings
Advanced settings of our Discounts feature are powerful, allowing for customization, automation, and protection.
Discount Type | How it works |

Minimum Check Size | This feature prevents a discount from being applied unless the check total is above a certain number. |
Auto-Apply | This toggle sets a discount to automatically apply, especially handy for “Buy x, Get x” discounts, allowing the POS to know when to automatically apply the discount, without need for staff to remember to push the button! |
Require Manager's Approval | Discounts can be locked behind manager approval, when this is toggled on, the discount must be approved by an Otter user with the “Supervisor”, “Brand and Location Manager”, or “Admin” role. |
Creating POS Discounts
Follow these steps to learn how to create a discount in the Otter Dashboard and create custom discounts in the POS, which can be applied at the POS terminal to a customer check.
How to create a discount in Otter Dashboard

Navigate to the [Marketing] app in the Otter Dashboard.

Select [POS discounts] from the left-side menu.

Select [Create discount].

The discount creation page includes three sections:- Discount settings
- Availability settings
- Advanced settings

Set discount names, select locations to apply the discount, and choose the discount type.- Order Discount: Fixed amount or percentage off the entire order.
- Item Discount: Fixed amount or percentage off a selected item or category (multi-select available).
- Buy X Get Y (BXGY): Fixed amount or percentage off a selected item/category when purchasing a specified item/category (multi-select available).

Discounts will appear under [Options] > [Add discount] on the new order screen.Discount Sync to the POS: When a discount is created in the Otter Dashboard, it is reflected in the POS Interface within (10 minutes).
How to create a discount on the Otter POS terminal

From the home screen, navigate to the [Orders] app.

Select [+ New Order].

Select [Options] and scroll down to [Add discount].

To create a new discount, select [Create discount].

Discounts can be created based on a [Fixed amount] or [Percentage]. -

Once the discount is created, it will automatically apply to the open order.
Applying Otter Dashboard discounts in Otter POS
Discounts created in Otter Dashboard will be available in the POS within 10 minutes of creation.
- If “Auto-Apply” has been selected, a discount may automatically apply if the Discount meets certain conditions.
- If “Require Manager’s Approval” has been selected, a discount must be approved by a user with the appropriate role.
How to apply discounts to an Otter POS order

Select [Options] at the top of the check.

Tap on the discount you would like to apply.Select [Add discount] to apply the discount to the order.

The discount has now been added to the order and will be visible in the order details.

What if an order does not meet the discount requirements?
An error message will be displayed in the order details.
Can discounts be locked behind manager approval?
Yes, any discount can be locked behind manager approval; when this is toggled on, discounts must be approved by an Otter user with the “Supervisor,” “Brand and Location Manager,” or “Admin” role.
Can you select multiple items or categories to apply the discount to?
Yes, but you have to apply the same discount to a whole category. You cannot de-select a single item from the category. If you do not want the entire category in the discount, you have to select per item.
