Otter POS: Payment types and Cash Discounts

Summary

Otter POS: Payments Made Easy! From cash to credit cards, tipping, split, or mixed payments, we've got you covered. Otter POS customers can set up cash discounts on Otter dashboard to reward eaters that paid by cash! Once diners decide to pay by cash, a cash discount will be auto-applied to the order in Otter POS terminals.

 

Payment Types

1. Cash and credit card

  • Cash and credit card payments are accepted.
  • For cash payments, make sure you’ve connected your cash drawer.

  • For credit card payments, make sure you’ve set up your card reader. Customers can tap, swipe or scan their credit as shown in the images below.

2. Tipping

  • Tips are included as part of the payment flow. Customers will be prompted to select their preferred tip amount before checkout.

3. Split payments

  • If your restaurant offers split payments, you can do so by tapping Split Check at the payment method selection

  • Enter the specific payment amount or split evenly among multiple guests.

  • Select Done to complete the payment flow.
  • You can still select the payment method after splitting the payment.

 

4. Mixed payments

  • If one customer wants to split payment across payment methods, you can also use the split payment function to do so.
  • Select the number of payment methods when prompted.
    • For example, for a customer to split payment via cash and card, you would select 2.

  • Select Done and select the payment method accordingly before completing the checkout.

Cash Discounts

You can set up cash discount on your Otter dashboard under POS tab → Cash Management section.

By toggling on the Enable cash discount, customer can view and update the discount details in the cash discount details expander.

Setup discount location & percentage

1. Customers can set the discount location and percentage in the cash discount details expander. By default, a 3% discount applies to all location of the merchant’s organization.
2. By unchecking the all location checkbox, all locations under the org show up with a discount percentage input box. 1f488d0a-b72d-41db-9185-925c101cb4d0.png

3. If an org has more than 5 locations, the location list:

  • becomes scrollable
  • a location amount text shows on the top left
  • a search icon shows on the top right.

5. Customer can re-check the “Apply discount to all locations” checkbox to apply the default 3%* cash discount to all locations.

PLEASE NOTE: By checking the “Apply discount to all locations” checkbox, a pop up reminder shows up to remind customer that all customized discount percentage to any specific locations will get overridden by the default 3% discount percentage.

Otter POS Terminal Experience

Once a merchant sets up a cash discount for a certain location, during checkout, cashier will be able to see the cash discount percentage indicator.

By selecting pay by cash, the cash discount auto apples to the order

PLEASE NOTE: Cash discount only applies to the orders that paid fully by cash without split payment. If customer select split payment, cash discount won’t apply to each payment even the payment is by cash.

Once the cashier selects cash as the payment method, if the location has the cash discount setup, the diner will be able to view the cash discount on the diner-facing screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm having trouble with my payment (partial pair order/split payment)


Please do basic troubleshooting first. If you've tried everything and the problem persists, it might be time to escalate it as a potential bug.

Are there different credit card fees depending on the bank?


No. Regardless of the bank or credit card, the cc processing fees will always be 2.3% + ​​$0.10 w/ card present and 2.9% +$0.30 without card present

Do we have other payment processor options available?


No

How does Otter POS payout schedule work?


  • Otter POS first payout
  • Otter POS: Otter POS stripe payouts are on a daily schedule of payouts 2-3 business days after the transaction took place.
  • Otter Online ordering + digital dine in + kiosk: 7 business/calendar days

Can I configure custom tips for Otter POS?


Not at this time

Can you issue Refunds from Otter POS?


Yes, you can issue refunds for credit card transactions within the last 12 hrs from Otter POS.

  1. Financials Applet (if within 12 hrs):
    • Navigate to Financials applet
    • Select ticket
    • Select "Refund"
  2. Orders Applet:
    • After placing an order, search order under "Orders" applet
    • Select drop-down and select "history"
    • Select "Issue Refund" and "Cancel Order"
  3. Business Manager (for managers only who have access to BM) - Direct Orders (kiosk) refunds
    • Log into Business Manager portal
    • Select "Order" from the drop-down
    • Select the ticket
    • Select "Issue a Refund"

What does an incomplete payment on stripe mean?


Payment likely did not go through
