Overview
With the Internal name feature, you can set an internal name for a menu, category, item, or modifier group that doesn’t affect how that entity will display to eaters on ordering platforms.
This allows you to efficiently search for menu entities within the Otter Dashboard— instead of having to search the full name of the entity, you’ll be able to find it searching the internal name.
Internal Name Example
In your cafe, you serve sugar-free syrup options for eaters to add to their coffee drinks. For displaying to eaters, you want the full name show.
However, internally, you don’t want to have to search “sugar-free” every time to locate the item— you can use an internal name to create a short-hand name.

Adding an Internal Name
An internal name can be added, from then Otter Dashboard, when you edit or create a:
- Menu
- Category
- Item
- Modifier Group
Follow the steps below to add an internal name to an existing or new menu entity.

Step 1
From the Otter Dashboard, select Apps > Menus. -
Step 2
Select the entity you’d like to add an internal name for or select to add a new entity.The Edit window for that entity will pop-up.

Type desired internal name for entity. -
Step 4
Click [Save] to confirm edits. -
Step 5
Entity will now be searchable within the Otter Dashboard under internal name.
FAQs
- No— Since internal names currently only appear in the Otter Dashboard and are not visible or published out to delivery platforms or ordering channels, republishing is not necessary.
- Yes— If you’d like to give multiple menu items the same internal name, this will not be flagged or blocked. Keep in mind that when searching, all items with that internal name will display.
- To delete an internal name for a menu entity, just click to edit and erase the name for Internal name. No name is needed to replace the previous internal name— you can simply delete the name previously entered and click [Save].
