Overview
Split Payments allow diners using QR Code ordering to split their bill total across multiple people during checkout. In the Otter Dashboard, you can set parameters for Split Payments:
- Enable or Disable feature
- Minimum order amount
- Maximum splits allowed
Enabling Split Payments
Split Payments can be enabled from an organization or location/store level.
- Organization Level: Applies to all brands and locations
- Location/Store Level: Applies to only that location within a brand
Follow the steps below to enable and set the parameters for digital dine-in Split Payments.
Step Process Image 1 From the Otter Dashboard, select Apps > Direct Orders. 2 Click [Settings]. 3 Click the Dine-in tab. 4 Scroll to the Open Tab section.
Be sure this feature is toggled ON.
5 Scroll to Split Payments section and toggle feature ON. 6 Enter a Minimum order amount.
Minimum Amount
If an order is under the amount set here, the diners will not be able to split the check payments.7 Select from the drop-down the Maximum split allowed. 8 Click [Save] to confirm changes.
Changes will apply to all brands.

Open Tabs Required
In order to allow Split Payments, you must also enable Open Tabs. If Open Tabs is not enabled, Split Payments will be uneditable within the Otter Dashboard.
Eater Split Payment Flow
Once a table is ready to close their digital dine-in tab, when enabled, the diner will see an option to Split payment at checkout. From there, they can:
- Choose how many ways to split the check
- Invite fellow diners to pay their part of the bill
- Finish check out process
Currently, diners can only split the check total evenly. They will not be able to split the check per item— only the total bill amount.
Example:
The bill total is $120. There are 4 diners that want to split their check. Each diner will pay $40 when split between the 4 people in their party.

Step 1
Once the tab owner (the diner who started the table tab) enters their contact and payment information, they will see the option to Invite people to split the bill. -
Step 2
The tab owner can then select the number to split the bill total by and invite people to pay via scanning a QR Code or copying a direct link. -
Step 3
Once the invitee accesses the split payment invite, they will need to click Continue to payment and proceed to checkout as usual. -
Step 4
The tab owner will be able to view payments made by split payment invitees by clicking [View payments] under the Split payments section of their checkout page.
Once all invitees have made their payments, the tab owner will be able to complete their checkout.

If a split payment invitee does not complete payment of their part of the bill, the tab owner will be charged the remainder of the bill total that was not paid by others within their split payment party.
FAQs
- No— This setting is for QR Code ordering for digital dine-in orders. However, there is a feature for Otter POS that allows split payments. Learn more on that here.
- No— At this time the check can only be split by total bill amount.
- Yes— For Split Payments, you can refund as you normally would for Online Orders. Learn more on that here.
