Setting Up an Otter Handheld
Use the steps outlined below to learn how to set up the Otter Handheld by registering the device and pairing it to your Otter POS terminal.

Open up the Otter Handheld box. The handheld device, a battery, and a charging cord should be included in the box. |

Remove the back panel of the device. Insert the battery into the back of the device. Put the panel back onto the back of the device, making sure it snaps closed. |

Plug the charging cord into the top right of the device and start charging the device. Hold the power button down for a few seconds until the device powers on. When you receive the handheld device, the Otter app will not be present. The device will need to be connected to an account to gain access to the Otter app.

Follow the prompts for language and country selection. Swipe right from the left edge of the reader screen to reveal a [Settings] button. Tap the [Settings] button and enter the admin PIN 07139. From here, you can update your WiFi settings and generate a pairing code for device registration. |

Pair your device to WIFI: To connect to WiFi or switch networks, go to [Settings], select [WiFi settings] to choose the network, and then tap [Connect]. Attempting to join a new network will disconnect the handheld device from any existing wireless connection. See Stripe’s network requirements for details about supported WiFi networks.

Generate a pairing code: To generate a pairing code, go to [Settings] and then select [Generate pairing code]. |

7 | Once the pairing code has been generated, open the [Otter app] on an Otter POS terminal or Otter Tablet. | |
8 | Navigate to [Settings], select the [Hardware] tab in the left side menu, and tap [Add a Card Reader]. | |
9 | Click on the bluetooth toggle to open a dropdown of connection options and select [Internet]. | |
10 | Select [Link new reader]. | |
11 | Enter in the pairing code you have on your Otter Handheld device. | |
12 | Once this is done, the handheld device will begin to download and open the Otter app. | |
13 | Once the app is loaded, complete device pairing as normal to login to the Otter App.

FAQs and Troubleshooting
How can I print tickets if I place an order on the handheld?
There is currently no printing functionality on the handheld devices. Customer tickets can be printed on the standard Otter POS terminal and Otter tablet.
Do Otter Handhelds support “offline mode”?
The Otter Handheld device supports offline mode in both card reader mode and mobile POS mode. All card payments taken on handheld while offline will be processed together once the internet connection is repaired.
How do I support customers when the handheld “stops working”?
Troubleshooting steps for re-pairing the Otter Handheld device:
- Power the handheld off and back on.
- Unpair the device in Otter Dashboard.
- Pair the device again.
- Re-attempt a test transaction.
