Overview
Photos are a critical component of menus. Having quality menu photos can improve the customer’s ordering experience, increase the possibility of an item being ordered, and even boost sales.
After adding photos for your menu in the Otter Dashboard, you can:
- Enable Auto Photo Enhancements
- View Insights on photo quality suggestions
- Ensure photos meet delivery platform requirements
Automatic Photo Enhancement
Within the Menu Settings, there is an option to enable the Automatic Photo Enhancement feature.
When enabled, this allows improvements to be made to your menu photos automatically to increase photo quality— saving you time and ensuring the best possible photos for your menu. This feature:
- Helps to reduce delivery platform photo issues
- Flags non-compliant or blurry photos
- Auto upsizes item photos to meet platform requirements
If Automatic Photo Enhancements is turned off, Otter will still alert you when there is an issue with your menu photo that would cause conflict publishing to a delivery platform.

When Auto Photo Enhancement is toggled OFF, Otter will still alert you of delivery platform requirement conflicts. To resolve, you can follow the prompt— in this case, clicking [Auto-resize photo].

When Auto Photo Enhancement is toggle ON, Otter will automatically adjust the image to meet requirements for publishing. An alert will show to inform you of the change made and give you the option to revert back to the original image.
Menu Photo Optimization Feature
The Menu Photo Optimization feature quickly identifies photo quality issues and gives insights on how to improve your menu photos.
When a possible photo improvement is detected, you will see an Insight icon, , appear for the corresponding menu photo. You will be able to see these Insight icons on the Photos tab thumbnail photo and in the Edit Item window.

Viewing Insight Details
To view Insight details, from the Photos tab, click on the photo. There, you will see suggestions for improving your menu photo.
Resolving Insight Suggestions
You will not be able to edit your photo within the Otter Dashboard to resolve these Insight suggestions. These notifications are to give you the information on how to improve your photo.
From there, you can delete the current photo and take/upload a new one, taking the Insight notes into consideration.
Keep in mind, these Insights are here to aid you but will not prevent image assignment, or image usage.

FAQs
- No— Currently, a feature to change the orientation of photos is not available.
- Yes— If an image on your menu has an Insight flagged, you can still use that image. The Insights are there to help you and give suggestions on how to improve your photos. If you’re happy with your current photo, you do not need to take action before using the menu photo.
- No— This is an automatically enabled feature within the Otter Dashboard to give suggestions on how to improve your menu photos. However, if you’re not interested in those tips— no worries. You don’t have to act on any suggestions provided and can use menu photos that you’re happy with.
