Overview
Otter customers can use the Excel import option to create or add a new menu within Otter Dashboard. This method also allows you to import multiple menus at once.
This import option gives you the ability to bulk upload menu items, modifiers, categories, descriptions, and prices by importing an Excel spreadsheet template within the Menus App.
Excel Template Download
For this option, you must use the Excel template provided by Otter (shown in the steps below).
You can work on the template within a different program, like Google Sheets or Numbers Apps, as log as it is saved as the file is saved in .xlsx format.
Excel Menu Template
Follow the steps below to import a menu using an Excel template.
Excel Template Menu Import Steps:

Select the Brand this menu will belong to. Note: The menu will only be available to locations under that brand. Name the menu and click [Continue]. |

Select the Upload as the import option. Click [Continue]. |

Open the downloaded file. Follow instructions to fill in the template to build a menu within the Excel sheet. Learn more about the Excel template and how to fill it out here. |

Return to Menu upload prompt. Click [Browse files]. Select file > click [Open] to upload. |

Successfully uploaded file will show at the bottom of the screen. Click [Continue]. Note: Click the x listed if wrong file was chosen to uploaded. |

Choose which locations to assign this imported menu to. NOTE: If a location listed is flagged as Conflict, it means that location currently has a different menu assigned to it. If you choose a location flagged as Conflict, the current menu will be unassigned and the new imported menu will be assigned. Click [Create Menu]. |

Upload Failed Error
While uploading your Excel template, if the upload was not successful, you will see the Upload failed error.
The error message will show a detailed list of issues, organized by excel sheet names, that need to be fixed. Once the issues are edited on the file, you can click the X listed then re-upload the corrected version.
Excel Template Details
The downloaded Excel template for importing a menu will contain four sheets:
- Menus
- Categories
- Items & Modifiers
- Modifier Groups
There will be instructions listed at the top of each sheet for reference. The last sheet on the Excel template is a Glossary to help to clarify any terms used in the template.
Not Supported with Excel Import
Nested modifiers, tax setting, and advanced pricing are not supported with the Excel template import option.
After uploading the Excel template in the Otter Dashboard, you can easily create nested modifiers and set advanced pricing.
FAQs
- No— Importing a menu from an Excel template can only be used to create a new menu.
- No— Currently, there isn’t a feature to download or export a current menu. At this time, there is only the option to import a menu using the Excel template.
