How to Enable Tips in Direct Orders

Overview

Enabling tips in Direct Orders only takes a few moments, but it has a major impact on your restaurant's team, morale, and performance.  Often assumed as an industry standard, the ability to "offer" tips is optional.

 


 

Process

Enable Tips in Direct Orders for All Stores

1 Log into Otter Dashboard  
2 From the Apps menu in the top-left of the screen, select Direct Orders  
3 On the Your Brands page, click the Settings button in the top-right. You'll be brought to the Organization settings for all brands page. The Settings button is marked by the word "Settings" and a gear icon. 
4 In the Organization settings for all brands page, choose either the Pickup, Delivery, or Dine-in tab. Each of these tabs has its own Tips settings that must be enabled individually. 
5 In the selected tab, scroll down to the Tips section.  This section is the third one from the top for each tab. 
6 Toggle whether or not to Collect tips, type in three preset Tip amounts, and select a Tip default Changing a preset Tip amount changes its respective Tip default option. 
7 Click the blue Save button in the top-right of the screen to save your tip settings.   

 

Enable Tips in Direct Orders for Specific Stores

3 On the Your Brands page, click the View Stores button under the brand you'd like to enable tips for.  
4 On the chosen brand's page, click the Settings button for the store you'd like to enable tips for.  
4 In the chosen store's Settings page, choose either the Pickup, Delivery, or Dine-in tab. Each of these tabs has its own Tips settings that must be enabled individually. 
5 In the selected tab, scroll down to the Tips section.  This section is the fourth one from the top for each tab. NOTE: The Tips section will only be available if the tab's respective "Override settings" toggle is switched ON.
6 Toggle whether or not to Collect tips, type in three preset Tip amounts, and select a Tip default Changing a preset Tip amount changes its respective Tip default option. 
7 Click the blue Save button in the top-right of the screen to save your tip settings.   

 


 

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How are tips processed?

A: As with all Direct Orders payments, tips are processed through Stripe. The Stripe platform contains detailed records of which channel and server each tip belongs to, so you'll always know where to pay out a specific tip. 

Q: Do the above tip settings apply for both Online Ordering and Digital Dine-in?

A: Yes, though you'll need to enable tips for both of these services manually under their respective tabs. 

Q: Does Direct Orders charge any commission fees on tips?

A: There is no commission applied by the credit card, fee is applied to the totality of the order.
