Mini Kiosk Setup Guide

Otter’s 15” Mini Kiosks are designed to provide all the functionality of a full-size kiosk but with the added benefit of smaller, space-efficient hardware—ideal for tight spaces or high-traffic areas like busy restaurants.

These mini kiosks are ideal for environments with limited real estate or high traffic, offering a streamlined, efficient solution for order-taking, check-ins, and other self-service needs. Whether you need the flexibility of a dual-purpose terminal or a dedicated kiosk for your customers, our mini kiosk options provide the perfect fit for any space.

Explore the following sections to dive deeper into setup, configuration, and best practices for each option.

We offer two distinct mini kiosk options, each suited to different business needs:

Kiosk Mode (Dual-Screen Terminal)

Kiosk Mode option is available for dual-screen terminals that can easily toggle between POS and Kiosk functionality. When Kiosk Mode is activated, the customer-facing screen transforms into a self-service kiosk, allowing customers to place orders, check-in, or access other services. When Kiosk Mode is deactivated, the terminal functions as a standard POS system for staff use.

Best for: Businesses that need flexible, multi-purpose devices that can switch between customer-facing kiosks and staff-facing POS systems.

InfoRequires Otter POS Subscription
The Kiosk Mode feature exists within the Otter app for Otter POS. Once the feature is enabled, a Kiosk app will appear on the Otter home screen.

Kiosk Mode (Dual-Screen Terminal) Hardware

To use the Kiosk Mode app, you must use an Otter POS Terminal.

Kiosk Mode uses the same printer and card reader as your Otter POS terminal - No additional setup or hardware is required. To set up a printer and card reader, follow the same process as pairing for a regular Otter POS setup. Learn more here: Otter POS Hardware Setup Guide.

Kiosk Device Pairing

All point-of-sale terminals must be paired. When you pair a device, you assign the device to your store’s physical location. To pair your device, you will need administrative access to the Otter Dashboard. Once the terminal is assembled and powered on, you can begin pairing the device to your Otter account.

Steps to pairing the kiosk (dual-screen terminal)

Step Process Image
1 Open the Otter App on the Kiosk and select [Pair device] to access the pairing code.
2 Log in to the Otter Dashboard on a browser, or by scanning the QR code on screen.
3 Click on the Profile icon and select [Settings].
4 Navigate to the [Devices] tab.
5 Select [Add new device].
6 Otter will prompt you to add the pairing code displayed on the terminal.
7 Enter the code from your terminal into the Otter Dashboard. Select the location of the device to pair it to the correct store location.

Enabling Kiosk Mode

Turning your Otter POS into a customer-facing self-serve Kiosk just takes a few clicks. Follow this guide for a step-by-step walkthrough: Enable Kiosk Mode.

Mini Kiosk (Single-Screen Terminal)

The Mini Kiosk is a single-screen terminal dedicated solely to kiosk use. It’s designed to provide guests with a seamless, self-service experience, and is perfect for locations with limited space or high customer volume.

Unlike the Kiosk Mode (dual-screen terminal), the Mini Kiosk is not intended for POS functionality. This single screen is the hardware that is included with a Mini Kiosk Bundle. This feature lives outside of the Otter app, and requires downloading the Kiosk app on the device.

Best for: Environments where you need a compact, customer-facing kiosk solution without the need for POS capabilities.

InfoRequires Kiosk App
The “Kiosk App” needs to be installed on the device to process orders through your Online Ordering website. Since there are no POS capabilities for this terminal, the Kiosk App is separated from the Otter app.

Assembling and powering on the Mini Kiosk terminal

Step Process Image
1 Start by unboxing your new Otter terminal.
2 Please empty the packet containing 3 screws and a wrench.
3 To secure the baseplate to the terminal arm, use the 3 screws and wrench provided. Ensure the feet of the baseplate are positioned outward.
It is advised to perform this task with the terminal in a horizontal position.
4 The assembly is complete. Now, place the terminal on the base to prepare for powering on the terminal.
5 Connect the power cable to the power brick.
6 Plug the DC male socket from the power brick into the receptacle at the bottom of the terminal's screen.
7 To power on the terminal, simply press and hold the power button located on the back-right side of the primary display. The boot screen will appear on the primary display as the terminal is starting up.
8 The terminal is now ready to connect to the WiFi network.

Kiosk Device Pairing

All point-of-sale terminals must be paired. When you pair a device, you assign the device to your store’s physical location. Now that the kiosk is paired to your Otter account and location, you can pair the S700 Payment Terminal to process credit card payments on the device.

Pairing the Payment Terminal

Step Process Image
1 Power on the S700 Payment Terminal using the top button on the right side.
2 Select the preferred [Language].
3 Select your [Country].
4

If you would like to display more than one brand’s menu, reach out to your Otter representative or Otter Support.

8 Once pairing is complete, the payment terminal will need to run an update. Follow below for additional steps.
9 The payment terminal will automatically run its update. During this process, the kiosk will display a "Terminal Disconnected" error message. This is completely normal and expected.

The kiosk will then return to the "Order & Pay Here" screen.

Accessing Kiosk Admin Settings

  • Tap the top-middle of the kiosk screen 5 times.
  • Enter admin pin: 641804
  • Key sections of Admin Settings:
    • Refresh arrow: In the top right corner, useful for when menu/settings updates are done in the dashboard
    • User Info: To check if the app is paired to the right facility, or if you need to log out and pair the app again
    • Store Filter: To select the desired store menu
      • Multi-brand ordering is not supported for small and medium-sized businesses unless pre-approved
    • Terminal: If the terminal needs to be re-paired to the app
    • Printer: To test print or check printer status

If the kiosk is locked in “Kiosk Mode”, you will still be able to access Kiosk Admin Settings since it is within the app. However, you cannot exit the Kiosk app to go to Device Settings if you want to change WiFi network, display brightness, or any other Android settings.

If you tap the bottom of the screen and the home bar does not appear (an arrow allowing you to exit the app), then the kiosk is locked in “Kiosk Mode.”
